TIPS to make a photo session successful

As a ballet dancer from the Mariinsky Theatre, I am often invited to photography sessions, and I recently organized one myself for my jewelry.

I am used to the camera, being on the backstage side, but I actually very much enjoyed the management-photographer side.

The model is the source of beauty and inspiration, while the actual creation is in the hands of the photographer.

There are two different perspectives on the same photography situation, and I realized one thing : a photography session is like teamwork.

A miracle can only happen if both of them (the model and photographer) are fully involved in the project.

They depend on each other.

A project appears successful only when both sides understand each other and are on the same page.

Moreover, creation is possible only when logistics are good, so nothing outside will interfere or disturb the creative process.

Today, I want to share a few very important tips that will make the photo session go smoothly.

What are the keys to a successful photo session ?

  1. Make sure the studio is well booked and everyone is aware of their time.

  2. Find a professional makeup artist that will help you create a beautiful base for the model’s face and hair (this is very important for the final result). The makeup artist needs to come earlier in order to prepare the model on time for the beginning of the session.

  3. Create a mood board. It’s very important. Usually it’s the photographer's work to create it, trying to answer the desires of the client, but since all projects are different, it can be a mutual exchange. The mood board is a key point. Basically, the mood board is an arrangement of images, materials, pieces of text, etc. intended to evoke the project's particular style or concept.

  4. Be on time. No one can be late because time is precious, every second late is a second less work, and since it’s teamwork, being punctual is simply respectful.

  5. Don’t be afraid to experiment. A photo session is an intimate moment, and if you enjoy it and don’t fear trying, it will be easier for everyone. It is an alive creation, not static, and not being afraid of going outside your comfort zone will only be positive.

  6. Ask again if something is not clear, and repeat if needed. After it will be too late.

  7. Trust the process. A creative project often has unexpected results.

I wish all of you to create incredible projects and fulfill this world with more Art.

Hope this post will be helpful !
